Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping, in their meeting on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit in Tianjin on Sunday, acknowledged the positive momentum and steady progress in bilateral relations, according to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA).

The two leaders underlined that India and China are development partners, not rivals, and agreed that differences must not be allowed to escalate into disputes. They emphasised that a stable partnership, grounded in mutual respect, mutual interest, and mutual sensitivity, was vital not only for the growth of their 2.8 billion people but also for shaping a multipolar Asia and world order in line with 21st-century realities.

Prime Minister Modi stressed the importance of peace and tranquillity in border areas as the foundation for advancing ties. Both sides expressed satisfaction over the disengagement achieved last year and the continued calm along the boundary since then. They reaffirmed their commitment to seeking a fair, reasonable, and mutually acceptable resolution of the boundary issue, building on the progress made in recent talks between their Special Representatives.

China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs also highlighted that Modi had credited his October 2024 meeting with Xi in Kazan for charting a constructive course in bilateral ties. The two leaders noted that India-China relations have now “returned to a positive track,” with the border remaining peaceful and stable and direct flight connectivity set to resume soon.

“These achievements,” the MEA said, “will benefit not only the people of both countries but also contribute to global stability and development.”
